Footage of live ponies being used on a carousel in Brussels has sparked outrage among animal-lovers.

A video captured on August 4 at a fair in the Belgian capital shows children smiling as the animals turn around in circles continuously.

In the clip, the filmer can be heard saying: “I was at the fête foraine and look what I saw.

“I find this really shameful. I guess they’re supposed to walk like that all day. They just have a little bowl of water to drink.”

The clip went viral in Belgium and France, amassing more than 900k views on Twitter, and attracting the ire of many users.

“I don’t know if it’s legal, but it shouldn’t be,” said one.

Another commented: “It’s absolutely disgusting, the animals must be suffering in the heat having to walk in circles like that.”

The city of Brussels responded, stating plans to outlaw the practice starting from January 2019.

They said in a tweet: “[The city of Brussels] assures that animal’s well-being at fairs remains of the utmost importance.”
