La Vuelta riders hit the deck as helicopter causes barriers to enter racecourse
Riders of the Vuelta a España bicycle race were left with injuries after a helicopter caused plastic barriers to veer into their path.
Footage captured on August 30 just after the end of stage six of the Spanish race in San Javier shows the moment a low-flying television helicopter caused barriers to veer into the path of riders, wiping some of them out.
AG2R La-Mondiale rider Julien Duval was left with two stitches in the groin after the collision, with other riders just missing the accident.
Movistar rider Nairo Quintana later tweeted: “Thank God and Virgencita [Virgin Mary] for the miracle of saving us.”
