A dramatic video has emerged of an oil truck in flames on a motorway in Algeria.

The footage, captured on Sunday morning, shows a truck, which was transporting 27,000 litres of oil, in a ball of flames at the side of a motorway close to Alger.

According to local media, the driver of the truck had to brake suddenly after the truck was hit by a car, lost control of the vehicle and then the concrete barrier.

The driver managed to smash his windscreen to escape the truck when the first chamber of the oil tank exploded.

The second chamber exploded soon after the driver escaped and it took ten firefighting trucks to extinguish the resulting fire.

A passenger in the car had to be taken to hospital for a broken shoulder but there were no further serious injuries.
