Waving French flags, oversized pens and pencils and ubiquitous “Je Suis Charlie” placards and chanting “Liberté! Liberté!” and “Charlie! Charlie!” – the latter in honour of the writers, editors and cartoonists murdered by a trio of jihadist gunmen in the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo last Wednesday — the crowd converged in front of City Hall to sing a few chansons of unity and observe two minutes of silence for the 17 dead and many more injured in France before marching to Yonge and Dundas Square.
