A suspected bomb sparked chaos in Bangkok this afternoon after being dumped outside the city's police headquarters.

The suspicious device was left on the packed Rama 1 road in the centre of the capital at 5.35pm local time.

Bomb disposal experts arrived and found a crisps tube and electronics with ball bearings inside but it did not have any explosive material and was not sophisticated enough to detonate.

Witnesses said there had been a ''green flashing light'' seen on the device.

CCTV showed a young man in a yellow shirt placing the device outside the Royal Thai Police headquarters at 5.35pm local time.

Further footage shows the crude homemade bomb device.

Roads in the area were closed causing traffic chaos. While the monorail outside the building was closed for commuters, leaving hundreds stranded on the platform.

Colonel Kritsana Pattanacharoen, deputy spokesman from the Royal Thai Police, said: ''We found a tube used for snacks but inside there was nothing that could cause an explosion.

''The suspect might only want to have caused panic.

''There was a small number of ball bearings in both boxes. There were two boxes in different places and both were in front of the police department.

''The area was closed and bomb disposal experts made the area secure.''
