A grandfather has been hailed a hero for spending hours every day using a rowing boat to clean a polluted lake in Cambodia.

The elderly man was captured pushing the boat to collect huge piles of trash clogging the Tonle Sap lake in Siem Reap province.

Footage from Thursday (August 28) shows the man in his 60s scooping out garbage including plastic bags, bottles, cans, branches and even an old fan.

He threw the waste onto the banks before putting them in garbage bags and dumping it in the bin.

Residents of Kampong Phluk village said the old volunteer is always on his wooden boat collecting garbage every day as it became part of his daily routine.

They don't know his name but he is believed to be in his 60s.

Chea Lim said: ''This grandpa spent one or two hours in the lake picking up trash. Nobody knows when he started doing this but his actions are totally inspiring.

''Kampong Phluk is a famous tourist destination in Siem Reap. What he does reminds us that we should keep our city and the environment clean and beautiful.''
