An old woman in south India won hearts across the nation for her selling savoury cakes to customers for only one rupee a cake.

80-year-old K Kamalathal runs a shop in village named Vadivelampalayam, Tamil Nadu state, selling Idli, or Indian savoury rice cakes, for one INR (less than 1p).

Kamalathal started selling the idlis for 50 paise, or half a rupee, thirty years ago and has raised her price to one rupee when the coins were discontinued.

She sells around 1000 idlis a day using a wood-burning stove, as seen in this video filmed on September 10. However she only turns a minor profit, as she keeps her prices low since many of her customers are low income.

Many have suggested that she raise her pricing but she has refused to do so.

K Kamalathal is already used to cooking for a large number of people, having stayed in a joint family. It is no big deal for her as she easily manages to grind the spices and batter to make those fluffy idlis. She makes sure her ingredients are fermented fresh.

She has kept her pricing minimal keeping in mind about her customers who are usually from the lower-middle background and cannot afford much to fill their stomach.

Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra tweeted the video of 80-year-old K Kamalathal, the woman who sells idlis to the needy, daily for Rs 1, with the caption, "One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I'd be happy to 'invest' in her business & buy her an LPG fueled stove.
