The momentous moment was captured as tens of thousands of climate activists gathered in New York City Friday (September 20), including Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Greta Thunberg as part of the Global Climate Strike to initiate a stop to climate change.

Onlookers watched with mouths agape as the wall of humanity took over Broadway for hours. One crowd estimate early on suggested more than 20,000 in attendance.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on Foley Square this afternoon to demand climate action as part of the Global Climate Strike and Climate March. Among these protesters were thousands of children, who were allowed to skip school for this event by the New York School System, and who were inspired to join the school strikes for climate change by Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old activist from Sweden.
