A diver had a fright when a huge tropical eel swam past his hand while he was touching cleaner shrimps.

Peter McGuiness and wife Belinda were scuba diving off the of Amed in Bali, Indonesia, when he began experimenting by letting the cleaner shrimp touch his hand.

The creatures, known for removing parasites from other organisms, were feasting when the eel suddenly emerged and gave Peter a fright.

He said: ''I was diving in Amed getting my hand cleaned by cleaner shrimps and the big eel came in for his turn.''

Peter and Belinda, both from Australia, were visiting the area of Amed for a holiday. It is best known for its extensive coral reefs and shipwrecks.
