Creepy dolls are used to replace locals in Japanese village
A hidden village in Japan replaced people with dolls to represent former villagers.
Nagoro village is situated in the hidden valleys of Shikoku some 550 kilometers southwest of capital Tokyo. Because of its remote location, residents often choose to leave for bigger cities to seek better opportunities.
Local resident Ayano Tsukimi, 69, began placing scarecrows on the streets to bring some life into their depopulated village more than a decade ago. The first scarecrow she ever made was the one that stood in her garden dressed in his father's clothes.
Since then, she started creating the life-size dolls made with sticks, newspaper, elastic fabrics for the skin, and wool for hair. She dressed them in old clothes to represent the people who used to live in the village.
Her dolls are now scattered around the village attracting tourists all over Japan and the world. She said that the secret to make them look alive is by applying the pink cosmetics to their lips and cheeks.
