This is the moment an Air India plane lands amid low visibility in New Delhi due to the toxic smog.

The video was filmed by Bitanko Biswas, a crew member, as the plane landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on November 3.

Indian officials soon realised that recent pollution levels had become a flight risk, with smog affecting nearly 600 flights. Between 9am and 1pm on November 3, 15 flights were cancelled, 37 flights were diverted to nearby airports and 550 flights were delayed.

“Trapped in toxic smog, Delhi Airport has turned into a gas chamber,” he commented.

The visibility at Delhi airport fell below the minimum visibility required due to smog affecting as many as nearly 600 flights.

Between 9 am and 1 pm on November 3, 15 flights were cancelled, 37 flights were diverted to nearby airports and 550 flights were delayed.

On November 3 and 4, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi reached as high as 858, way above desirable AQI 50.

New Delhi’s air, loaded with carcinogenic pollutants, was almost six times the reading in Beijing.

While vehicular and industrial pollution are at alarming levels, Delhi has been engulfed in smoke due to burning of crops in neighbouring states.
