Conservative candidate for Brentford and Isleworth Seena Shah has said she opposes the government's plans for an expansion at Heathrow airport.

Shah, speaking at hustings in Chiswick, said: "I don't agree with expansion and I don't think it would pass any criteria now based on the environmental impact. It just isn't compatible.

At Gurdwara hustings Shah reiterated her opposition to the plans: "I think expansion at Heathrow is not the way to go.

"At the moment, as I understand it, I would be voting against it on a personal level.

"I think it's wrong to expand an airport and have more aircraft in the air when it's going to be to the detriment of our environment."

According to the filmer, in Shah's latest flyer "doesn't say anything about opposing government policy or voting against expansion".

In public Seena Shah – Conservative candidate for Brentford & Isleworth – has said firmly that she would vote against the government's policy for a third runway at Heathrow. This is a major issue in the constituency.
But in her latest flyer, she makes no such commitment whatsoever.
Instead she says she "welcomes a review" and will "stand up for residents' interests".

That is different from what she told the Chiswick hustings when she said: "I don't agree with expansion and I don't think it would pass any criteria now based on the environmental impact. It just isn't compatible."
At the Gurdwara hustings she was asked specifically: "You'd vote against the Conservative government (on Heathrow expansion)?"
She replied: "I think it's really important that the environmental debate has moved on significantly since we put that as government policy. I think they need to revise that in light of the green agenda and I think expansion at Heathrow is not the way to go.
"At the moment, as I understand it, I would be voting against it on a personal level.
"I think it's wrong to expand an airport and have more aircraft in the air when it's going to be to the detriment of our environment."
In her latest flyer Seena Shah doesn't say anything about opposing government policy or voting against expansion. She chooses very non-committal words: "I will always stand up for residents' interests when it comes to Heathrow Expansion, and make sure that Heathrow is living up to its environmental and noise commitments. I welcome the review the government has ordered and will make sure the voices of local people are heard."
So what she puts down on paper differs from what she has been going round telling constituents in her speeches.
The other main candidates – Labour's Ruth Cadbury, Lib Dem Helen Cross and Daniel Goldsmith, Green – are all unequivocal in their opposition to Heathrow expansion and, overall, to expansion of the aviation industry as such.
