Mother koala sitting in tree with her baby cradled in her arms

A mother koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) sits in the crook of a tree branch protectively cradling her baby, known as a joey, close to her chest on a windy day.

Koalas are herbivorous marsupials that carry their joeys in their pouch for the first six to seven months after birth. When the joeys emerge from the pouch, they stick close to mom for another six months, often riding on her back as she climbs the branches of the eucalpytus tree whose leaves are their only source of food. Koalas, which are endemic only to Australia, are classified as threatened/vulnerable on the international conservation status list and many have been killed by bushfires, loss of habitat and other environmental threats. Climate change is increasing the risks to koalas, which are vulnerable to heat stress and dehydration.
