A chimpanzee is encouraging people to ditch plastic bags - with a daily show in which he chooses a fabric tote bag.

The primate, named Jon, takes part in the 'Let's use bio bag and stop plastic' campaign at the Songkhla zoo in southern Thailand.

He was seen last Friday (Jan 10) joining in by dashing over to a plastic bag and tote bag - then choosing the environmentally friendly option.

He grabbed the fabric tote bag and ran around in his enclosure and started dancing.

The chimp responsed to the cheers from the crowd with a playful gesture. He danced until he was tired, then drank juice to restore his energy and continue playing.

Zoo director Chalermwut Kasetsomboon said they are delighted that Jon can encourage visitors to use fabric bags instead of plastic.

He said: "The zoo carried out a campaign to reduce the use of plastic in the zoo and we wanted it to be colourful and memorable, so we decided to let Jon participate in the event.

"He became the presenter of this campaign by grabbing the fabric tote bag instead of a plastic bag. We want visitors to choose the safe bags instead of plastic, just like Jon does.''
