Sub-zero temperatures in southern Kashmir has created a shortage in water as the piping in the area has frozen over.

Footage recorded on January 15 shows locals collecting water from nearby streams as their taps have run dry.

Villagers are wary of health concerns as the water gathered from streams may be polluted and unhygienic.

The freezing of water supply pipes due to sub-zero temperatures has caused acute drinking water shortage in many villages in Shopian area of south Kashmir.

Locals told the Prabasakshi that the taps in their villages are running dry because of which the inhabitants are forced to use polluted and unhygienic water from local ponds and streams which can cause health problems in the area.

Though the villagers said that they brought the matter before PHE authorities but till date nothing changed on ground. They said that people might suffer from water borne diseases if the matter was not immediately resolved.

The villagers appealed PHE authorities to look into the matter and direct the concerned officials to take necessary measures for restoring water supply in these areas.
