The West Kowloon station is under legal jurisdiction of mainland, and famously, an employee of the British Consulate, Simon Cheng was arrested in this station upon his return from mainland. Organizers claimed 230,000 people marched that day, but police stated only 56,000 people marched.

At the time, organisers reportedly said that they chose West Kowloon train station because it was the nearest place they could get to mainland China to spread their message.
