Descending Montmartre on the Funiculaire de Montmartre

Buy video

Montmartre is a large hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement. It is a chic village with little surprises such as the first Cabaret in the world and even its own vineyard. There is even a cemetery where many famous famous artists who lived and worked in the Montmartre area have been laid to rest. Known as Cimitière du Nord, it is the third largest necropolis in Paris.

Perhaps the 2 most famous attractions are the town centre and the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur. The former is lined with many shops selling artworks from the local artists. The streets are also bustling with Caricature artists and painters.

Access to the town centre is by climbing its steep hill of stairs. Those who are less able have the option of riding up the Montmartre on the Funiculaire de Montmartre which uses the same tickets as the Paris Metro system, i.e. is counted as part of daily Paris Transport travel card, etc. Alternatively, one could take a taxi or drive up.

This video shows us descending in the Funicular and it happens to be my first experience ever riding one one. Funicular cars are connected by rope so that as one descends, its weight is used to help pull the other one up the hill. This way, the system is often almost 'in balance' and thus requires very little energy to operate.

First time visitors should definitely take a tour on the Le Petit Train de Montmartre as seen in my other video. This tour takes visitors around the mountain itself and also covers other places of interest that are around Montmartre for a small fee.
