This is the bizarre moment residents who broke a COVID-19 curfew were forced to do press-ups as a punishment.

The resident was caught riding on motorcycles after the 10 pm lockdown in a village in Chonburi, eastern Thailand, on Monday evening (April 6).

In the capital Bangkok, violators face fines of 40,000GBP and prison for up to two years.

However, village chief Pirat Withi has been dolling out the quaint punishment making law-breakers to push-ups and star jumps at the roadside.

Together with security volunteers, officials set up a checkpoint on the main road to prevent residents from going out of their houses at the nighttime curfew.

Footage shows residents are asked to do push-ups and jumping before they are provided facial masks by the team.

The creative town hall boss said that he wanted people to stay inside their homes during the coronavirus lockdown and not punish them to strictly.

Pirate said: "It would be great if all of the residents stay inside during the curfew because it helps lower the pandemic infection.

"I did not want to punish them in aggressive ways, so I asked them to do some light exercise instead."

People who pass through the checkpoint have to do a temperature check and wash their hands with a sanitiser before entering the village.
