STORYLINE:
After considering Huawei and ZTE a "threat to national security", the United States government of Donald Trump considers blocking TikTok, the popular Chinese social network, arguing serious problems of data security and access to personal information from Beijing of the users.
President Trump has told reporters he’s planning to ban TikTok from operating in the US. “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday night.
“I will sign the document tomorrow,” said Trump on Friday night, indicating that a ban could take effect “essentially immediately.”
The application already accumulates 165 million downloads in the country and worldwide, has exceeded 2,000 million.
For its part, the United Kingdom has finally given in and will not allow the presence of Huawei in its 5G network. Its Culture Minister, Oliver Dowden, confirmed the exclusion of Asian technology from next year.
Furthermore, not only will its components be discontinued from January 1, but it will be illegal to install them and it is expected that those that are already operational will be replaced before 2027.
Donald Trump confirmed that he himself has convinced other countries not to use Huawei.
"We are dealing with unreliable Chinese technology and telecommunications providers," Trump said, noting that the United States has convinced many countries, "and I have done it myself, not to use Huawei, because it is a great risk of security".
"I have spoken to many countries and I have told them that they cannot do business with us if they are using it. The United Kingdom announced that they will not use it," confirmed the president.
Since 2018, Tiktok has been on a free climb in the United States, going beyond other local applications, such as Instagram or Snapchat. In June, TikTok appointed a U.S.-based CEO in June to try to distance himself from his Chinese roots.
Tik Tok, meanwhile, has sought to distance itself from being owned by a Chinese company. With regard to the security of user data, he has assured that he stores them in the United States, and that they have a backup in Singapore.
In a blog post, Tik Tok CEO Kevin Mayer said: “We are not politicians, we do not accept political publicity and we do not have an agenda; our sole goal is to remain a vibrant and dynamic platform for all to enjoy. ”
