People watching enthralled as wild African Elephants feed close by

Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp is situated on the north bank of the Crocodile River that forms the southern boundary of Kruger National Park. A maternal herd of African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta africana) lives in the narrow vegetated corridor between the park boundary fence and the Crocodile River, and is often seen moving near the camp, feeding as they go. This sight delights people staying in the camp, and they rush to the electrified camp fence to watch and photograph the elephants feeding calmly at close range. Late one afternoon in 2020 camp staff had placed wild mangoes raked up from the camp’s grounds outside the fence near the camp’s water supply pump. Wild mangoes (Cordyla africana) are a favourite food of elephants, and the herd made a beeline to the pile of fruit. When they had eaten all of the mangoes the elephants switched to eating herbs before moving off.
