Rising sea levels and king tides brought flooding to southern Florida on Friday (September 19).

Every fall, higher ocean levels due to sea level rise and king tides -- higher than normal tides due to the alignment and proximity of the sun and the moon -- bring flooding to South Florida's coastal communities. This video was taken just after high tide at noon at various locations along the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach, Florida. The Palm Beach County city's historic Marina District has flooded for many years. An engineering contractor told the city it will cost nearly $400 million to protect neighborhoods, roadways and critical infrastructure from the rising seas. The city is responding by raising sea walls. A new section in the Marina District managed to hold back the tide, but a nearby section of street flooded with several inches of water and other neighborhoods were experiencing flooding, too. The problem with seawalls is two-fold in South Florida: 1. When a seawall is raised, all sea walls have to be raised or the diverted water will flood other properties. 2. South Florida is built on permeable limestone and sand, which means as the sea level rises the water will creep under the seawalls and resume flooding the neighborhoods. Florida's incoming Republican state senate and house leaders authored a recently published column that acknowledged the challenges sea level rise poses to coastal communities. They called for federal, state and local communities to do a better job of mounting a coordinated response to the rising waters that threaten billions of dollars worth or property, jobs, tourism, and lifestyles.
