Protesters attacked a police vehicle during unrest in Indonesia on Wednesday (October 7).

The mob, believed to be students, pelted a police truck used to enforce COVID-19 restrictions, while it was patrolling the residential area of Pejompongan in Jakarta.

One of the witnesses, Susi, 40, said the driver immediately stopped the vehicle when it was attacked with stones. Two policemen left the vehicle and chased the teenagers.

Susi said: "The other teenagers came to the car and broke it. They also rolled the car and nearly set it on fire."

The teenagers were dispersed by the police when they gathered in front of the building of a bank.

Susi added: "The clashes happened so fast. The teenagers fought the police using belts, wood and stones."

A number of police and army members came to the scene of the clashes to secure the situation.

The Head of the Central Jakarta Metro Police Narcotics Unit, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Afandi Eka Putra, said that 14 teenagers had been arrested.

He said: "They had escaped but were caught. We've also matched the CCTV footage to check their faces and gestures."

The police also confirmed that the vehicle that was damaged was a police van used to enforce COVID-19 restrictions.
