A reckless driver sped over a level crossing to beat an oncoming train at the same place 19 passengers were killed in a horror crash in Thailand.

Onlooker Piboon Kumpirom was waiting for the train to pass with the other motorists when the pickup truck dashed through the tracks in Khlong Kwaeng Klan district, Chachoengsao province on October 20.

The train sounded its horn but the truck driver ignored the warnings and continued over the railway line - with just moments to spare before the locomotive thundered past.

The crossing did not have a barrier so he was able to pass despite the shocked onlookers trying to stop him.

Piboon said: "It was dangerous when the truck did not stop and wait for the train. He should be more careful when driving in public."

Luckily, the driver made it on the other side alive and unscathed.

The reckless driving came just days after 18 passengers and a bus driver were killed at the same crossing when the vehicle was hit by a train.

Locals have been afraid of crossing the line after the horror crash and have since asked the officials to build a barrier and make noticeable warning signs.

Responding to the crash, Thailand's Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said this week that he would issue an order to have all railway crossings across the country installed with barriers and signals.
