Hurricane Zeta left destruction in its wake as it hit the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Monday night, October 26.

Resorts along the coast were lashed by strong winds and heavy rains from the Category 1 storm. On the island of Cozumel, off the eastern coast of the peninsula, streets were blocked by downed trees and electricity poles the next morning.

Zeta has now weakened to a tropical storm but is expected to strengthen back into a hurricane as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico, towards the US.

Hurricane Zeta made landfall as a Category 1 storm along the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Monday night, October 26.

Resorts along the coast were lashed by strong winds and heavy rains. In Cozumel, the island off the eastern coast of the peninsula, downed trees and electricity poles caused by winds of the storm were seen the next morning.

Zeta has now weakened to a tropical storm but is expected to strengthen back into a hurricane as it enters the Gulf of Mexico.
