Carver makes exotic sculpture out of coconut shells in east India

A man in eastern India creates artworks out of coconut shells otherwise thrown away as waste or used as firewood in coastal villages.

Chittaranjan Bhoi, popularly known as Kanhu Bhai,
collects coconut shells cuts them into different shapes and sizes and polishes them using sandpaper.

Bhoi, filmed here on October 25, creates various items including house decor, flower vases, lamp shades, tea cups and other utility items from coconut shells, and paints them with vivid colours

He commented: “When I first started doing this people used to laugh at me. Now they admire my work. This gives me a kind of satisfaction,

"The proud and treasured moment in my life was the day when members of the West Indian cricket team during their last visit to Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium for a match had sipped tea in cups made of coconut shells by him."

Bhoi sells these articles in the market for a living in his home city of Cuttack in Odisha state.
