This is the terrifying moment stranded locals sheltered in a shopping mall as Typhoon Goni smashed into the Philippines killing at least 16 people yesterday (November 1).

They fled into the closed building in Carmines Sur province when the storm made landfall, bringing winds of up to 180mph and driving rain.

Footage shows how the shopping mall suffered severe damage with parts of the ceiling being torn down and debris being thrown across the floors.

Everyone inside escaped unhurt when the typhoon, known locally as Typhoon Rolly, had passed.

Officials said that at least 16 people had been killed by the typhoon, which brought strong winds and heavy rain. There were severe floods after rivers burst their banks and swamped surrounding fields.

The storm, also known as Typhoon Rolly, packed winds that increased from 100 mph to 180 mph between Thursday and Friday night as it hurtled across the Western Pacific Sea. It was the strongest typhoon of 2020.

It made landfall in the country on Sunday morning. Forecasters said it had the same force as a category 5 hurricane.

More than one million residents - around 1,000 of them with Covid-19 - were evacuated from their homes into temporary evacuation centres. There were concerns that evacuations could further spread the virus.

Weather and disaster officials said Typhoon Goni is among the strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines since Haiyan, which killed more than 6,300 people in 2013.
