Passengers aboard the Viking Grace cruise ship were left stranded after the vessel ran aground in the Finnish autonomous archipelago of Aland on Saturday (November 21).

Footage shows the large vessel hours before it was towed away to safety in the Aland port town of Mariehamn.

The voyage started in Finland's Turku and finishes in Stockholm, with a break in Mariehamn.

Stormy weather was the reason for the ship running aground as strong winds and heavy rain battered the area of the ferry terminal.

429 passengers and crew were stuck on board for the duration of the rescue.
