The northern end of Bribie Island, Queensland, was hit by coastal flooding on Monday (December 14).

Drone footage shows the swells breaking through the sand dunes on the northern end of the island.

It is the first time in recorded history that the coastal surges have broken through the island, one year on from the devastating bushfires that ravaged Australia last year.

The filmer's brother-in-law said online: "This time last year on the Sunshine Coast we had bushfires.

"Now we have this.

"The king tide at Bribie Island has pushed through the island and broken through."

Southeastern Queensland was hit with torrential rain, with some areas experiencing 750 millimetres in 48 hours.
