A state of emergency was declared in several counties of New York, including Albany, on Thursday, December 17. Much of the region remained shut down due to heavy snow.

Winter storm Gale, the first Nor'easter of the season, brought heavy snow from Wednesday and forced government offices to close. The majority of flights from airports in New York were canceled or delayed due to severe weather conditions.
