Markets in Thailand were eerily quiet as the second wave of Covid-19 cases spread through the country.

Footage shows the Ta Yang market in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, which many locals are now avoiding following a surge in the pandemic.

Vendors said that 80 per cent of customers had disappeared in recent weeks following an outbreak of the virus which started at a seafood market in Samut Sakhon province, near the capital Bangkok.

They believe that many locals are afraid of the virus and are avoiding the once-busy market.

Thailand recorded 527 new cases of the virus on Tuesday (Jan 5), taking the total to 8,966.

Ministers have closed hundreds of thousands of ‘high-risk venues, imposed restrictions on non-essential businesses, and encouraged people to work from home.
