Shingwedzi Rest Camp in the northern part of Kruger National Park is situated on the bank of the seasonal Shingwedzi River. About six kilometres downstream of the Camp is Kanniedood Dam which holds back water after flows in the Shingwedzi River, creating a long lake inhabited by large populations of Hippos and Nile Crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus). When the Shingwedzi has small flows, dozens of Crocodiles, Yellow-billed and Marabou Storks, Spoonbills, Egrets, Hamerkops and other bird species congregate near the causeway to catch fish as they pass over it in the shallow overflow. However, in January 2013 the Shingwedzi River had a massive flood when 400 mm (nearly 16 inches) of rain fell in a week. The Camp was flooded to a depth of about two metres, and Kanniedood Dam burst, leaving behind a series of shallow pools that could not support the previous large populations of Hippos and Crocodiles. The pool below the causeway is now mostly filled with sand, and the large flood-driven feeding events occur no more.
