Thousands took to the streets across France on Thursday (February 4) to protest against growing job insecurity and in support of public services.

Footage filmed in Paris shows peaceful protesters setting off flares and dancing.

The protest was called by CGT, one of France's major trade unions.

Behind a head banner displaying “jobs, salaries, working hours, pensions … let’s revive the social“, the demonstrators, numbering 20,000 according to the CGT, left the Place de la République in the direction of that of the Nation.

This event is one of some 165 initiatives identified throughout France by the organizers with, alongside the CGT, Solidaires, the FSU and several youth organizations.
