Africa has many species of Dung Beetles that span a wide range of sizes. Dung Beetles belong to the family Scarabaeidae, or Scarab Beetles, some of which were sacred to the ancient Egyptians. Dung Beetles provide an important ecological service by collecting dung, forming it into balls then laying an egg in the dung ball before burying it. When the egg hatches the larval Dung Beetle consumes the dung, finally emerging as an adult beetle. This large male Dung Beetle had somehow been flipped onto its back and was struggling to right itself. After a huge struggle it succeeded in getting back on its feet, found its dung ball and began pushing it off the dirt road to bury it.
