Buenos Aires province in Argentina has begun vaccinating its over 70s with Russia's Sputnik V vaccine.

So far priority has been given to health and government workers but now senior citizens in the country's most populous province are getting the jab.

The Buenos Aires Province government has begun vaccinating residents aged over 70 with the Sputnik V vaccine, according to its Health Ministry.

Up until now, healthcare and government workers had been given priority to receive vaccines, but the vaccination programme is now being rolled out to senior citizens in the nation's most-populous province.

SaludBAP, the official Twitter account of the Province of Buenos Aires’ Health Ministry, said in a post: “The mass vaccination of adults 70 and over has begun. Together with legislators and councillors, we worked our way around the vaccination stations installed in schools in #LaPlata, where they will be vaccinated until classes begin and they are transferred [to another site].”

Despite complaints about delays in the vaccination programme for senior citizens, the provincial portfolio claimed that the roll-out to the elderly was always due to start on Thursday.

“It was always planned for today. Some say that it has been delayed because supposedly it was supposed to begin yesterday. Actually, it did begin yesterday with the opening of the 169 schools, and today it [the vaccination programme] comes into effect,” said the Ministry, which is led by Daniel Gollán.

When school classes begin, the temporary vaccination centres in schools will be moved to university and government buildings.

Teachers will also be included in this round of vaccinations, officials said.
