A peacock in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was given state honours after being killed in a car accident.

Police officers buried the bird with complete state honours after the peacock was pronounced.

The peacock had become entangled in barbed wire after attempting to fly out of the way of an oncoming car.

Police officers had rushed the bird to a nearby vet but it was pronounced dead before it could be treated.

Footage from March 21 shows officers laying the bird to rest and draping an Indian flag over the peacock.

In 1963, the peacock was declared the national bird of India due its involvement in the country's religion and tradition.
