An old block of flats was razed to the ground in Vénissieux, a suburb of Lyon in France, on Friday 2 April.

The Monmousseau block of flats was destroyed at 10:30am local time. Around 700 residents of other homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

The 197 families who lived in the building were previously relocated. About 55% of the former inhabitants have been relocated to Vénissieux, 35% to the Lyon metropolis, and the rest has been entrusted to other social landlords.

Built in the late 60s, the block became a symbol of the slow decline of the area and it is hoped that the demolition will be an opportunity for some improvement.
