Footage shows the deserted scenes on Khaosan Road in Bangkok, Thailand, today (May 14).

The street – one of the city’s best-known attractions – would normally be full of backpackers and tourists from around the world.

However, travel restrictions imposed in March last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic have meant that the area has been eerily quiet for more than a year.

Hopes of tourists returning were dashed with the emergence last month of more Covid-19 infections in Bangkok which sparked mass closures of bars and restaurants.

Ministers hope that a vaccine roll out could allow travellers to return to the country, which relies on tourism for between 10 per cent and 18 per cent of its entire annual GDP.

Khaosan Road or Khao San Road is a short street in central Bangkok, Thailand constructed in 1892 during the reign of Rama V.
