Blue sharks feasted last week on the carcass of a fin whale that was struck and killed by an Australian Navy destroyer off the coast of California.

The 481-foot HMAS Sydney had been conducting joint exercises with the U.S. Navy when it struck two whales at an unknown offshore location.

The fin whales, measuring 65 and 25 feet, were discovered lodged to the hull of the Australian Royal Navy vessel after it had pulled into San Diego on May 8.

One of the whales was then towed out to sea where it was devoured by the sharks on May 13.
