A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen is shown feeding her family of seven cubs in an urban garden. The film was shot through a glass door to avoid disturbing them. This is a substantial litter, but all the cubs seem to have been receiving equal care, all are being fed, all appear to be thriving, and this vixen is clearly a very capable mother as she is in good condition herself. This vixen was not previously known to the photographer prior to her arrival, and he has not yet attempted to take any photographs of her as he does not wish to spook her. Interestingly the same location was used during the previous year to rear a family (by another vixen well known to the photographer). Both mothers may have transferred their young cubs to this safe location. It is likely that all the cubs would share the same father, an old dog fox that has held the territory for at least four years and mated with a series of different vixens during that time.
