The Philippines placed its National Capital Region around Manila under alockdown to curb the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19.

Coronavirus cases in the country rose to their highest level for four months, thanks to the more contagious variant.

Thousand of cops have been deployed to man checkpoints within the Metro Manila bubble, which also includes the adjacent provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal.

Footage filmed on 6 August showed police at one checkpoint.

Police Lt. Anjo Ulpindo Doliente said (in Tagalog): “Motorcycles are over here in the first lane. In the second lane are the public utility vehicles. Next are the private ones and the emergency fast lane at the innermost. That is how they are categorised and stopped and all of them are being screened.”

“Our main focus is to monitor who should go in and out, identify APOR (Authorized Persons Outside Residence) and UPOR (Unauthorized Persons Outside Residence). We monitor by managing those who go in and out of the NCR (National Capital Region) borders,” he added.
