Authorities close Biarritz beaches to swimmers during peak tourist season due to toxic algae
Authorities in the southwestern French resort of Biarritz have banned swimming on local beaches during peak tourist season due to the presence of toxic algae.
According to a message posted on the Ville De Biarritz Facebook account, the decision was taken on Sunday (August 8) after Ostreopsis Spp was discovered in the water following recent rainfall.
According to the statement, the algae can cause skin problems and flu-like symptoms.
Surfers were informed of the closure and asked to leave the water by officials on jet skis.
