Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu, who helped end apartheid in South Africa, has died at the age of 90.

The video shows archive footage of the archbishop celebrating his 90th birthday earlier this year on October 7 in Cape Town.

Along with Nelson Mandela, he had been one of the driving forces behind the movement to end the apartheid policy of racial segregation and discrimination. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu Celebrates his 90th birthday today.

The Nobel Peace laureate was celebrated in a special Eucharist service hosted in the St Georges Cathedral in Cape Town.

Tutu was in high spirits and waved to the congregants. The service was addressed by Dr. Allan Boesak, a fellow struggle veteran and church leader who wished Tutu from the pulpit.

Among the attendees were retired politicians, family friends and colleagues who sang happy birthday in the Cathedral benches.

The South African Council of Churches General Secretary, Bishop Malusi Mpolwana looked back at the role Tutu played during the struggle and highlighted the gift South Africans can deliver to Tutu.
