This year's Diwali has brought an early relief for drivers in India as retail prices for petrol and diesel were slashed by between Rs 5-10 per litre on Thursday morning.

The price drop was in line with the government's announcement to cut duty on fuel to contain surging rates.

Since, January 1, 2021, fuel prices have risen by more than Rs 26 a litre before Thursday's cut.

The footage was shot on Thursday (November 4) and shows riders filling up their scooters at an Indian Oil petrol station.

The Government of India has announced an excise duty reduction on petrol and diesel on the eve of Diwali on Wednesday. A Ministry of Finance release informed that the excise duty on petrol will be reduced by Rs 5 and the excise duty on diesel will be reduced by Rs 10 from Thursday, and the prices of petrol and diesel will come down accordingly.

After reduction in central excise duty on petrol and diesel, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted that states should add to this celebration by reducing VAT on fuel to give further relief to consumers.
