Christmas lights have been turned on in Madrid, Spain, in a ceremony that saw fireworks light up the night sky.

The ceremony to switch on the lights took place in the Plaza de España.

At the meeting point of Plaza España and Gran Vía, an 18m (59 feet)-high Christmas tree is adorned with 800 coloured balls, 200 candies and 150 luminous strings of lights that in total are over 1,800m in length, with 27,000 points of light.

At the base of the tree are six giant present boxes.
