Rare giant waves draw surfers to Newquay in Cornwall, UK

Rare giant waves brought some of the UK's best big-wave surfers to Fistral Bay in Cornwall, UK, on Sunday 12 December.

The wave-chasers headed to the Newquay area from around the country for the large Cribbar wave.

It breaks infrequently and only on days with exceptionally large swell, good wind direction and a favourable tide. It is also known as the Widowmaker.

Jeff Scott from Sussex was one surfer out on the waves. He is one of the UK's most well-known big-wave surfers, often travelling long distances for waves like these.

Tom Butler, who was once badly hurt surfing the notoriously huge waves in Nazaire, Portugal, was also seen on the back of a jet-ski driven by his partner.

Big wave surfers are often towed into surf by jet-ski, in order to reach a fast enough speed to catch it.
