The "gaokao" is China's National Higher Education Entrance Examination. It's an opportunity for young people to enter a good university and is considered of utmost importance for the future of high school students.

Students from Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School are shown launching books and papers into the air at their school campus before the gaokao to celebrate the moment. This has become a yearly trend in several high schools.

Some high school authorities think the activity helps students to relax and release pressure before the examinations. Students say throwing out their books represents bidding farewell to exam-oriented education and, hopefully, starting a more enjoyable future life.

The gaokao will be held on June 7 and June 8 this year.
