A hippopotamus had a cake made from fruits and vegetables for his 12th birthday.

Nadech, the pygmy hippopotamus received a cake made from an assortment of carrots, guava, banana, pumpkin, papaya, and grass at Khon Kaen zoo in Thailand on March 2.

He was given a 'party' by zoo staff who sang him a happy birthday while excited guests visited his enclosure.

Footage shows Nadech enjoying his treat and sharing it with other dwarf hippos. Staff were also seen spelling out 'happy birthday' using carrots.

Zoo officer Narongwich Chodchoi said: 'We want to invite everyone to come to our home. We have a donation drive to gather funds for sustaining the animals' medical needs.'

Nadech lives with his mother named Yaya and his four siblings, who were all from Nakhon Ratchasima province before they were transferred to Khon Kaen in 2013.

The zoo is opened to visitors everyday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm.
