A man dressed as a leprechaun and riding a craft shaped like a sea monster was spotted being towed down a lurid green Chicago River on Saturday 12 March.

The bizarre scene was part of the city's annual celebration of St Patricks day.

According to the organiser, chemicals were used for several years to dye the river green but now a vegetable-based powder is used in the annual stunt.

The leprechaun in the floating monster appears to have been a private initiative.
