An Indian bison was rescued by forest officials after it strayed into a neighbourhood in eastern India's West Bengal on March 20.

The rescue took place in the Mahesh Tala area of Parokata village in Alipurduar district.

Video showed officials waiting for the tranquilliser to sedate the animal, also called a gaur. Once the animal was sedated, the rescue operation was carried out.

Wooden planks and bamboo were used to carry the bovine.

Officials also tied the gaur's legs, to prevent any unexpected movement and covered its face with a sack to keep it calm.

The animal was then placed in a truck and moved elsewhere.

According to reports, two gaurs had entered the area on Saturday. While the officials rescued one, the other bison was still at large on Sunday.

Meanwhile, three people sustained injuries after coming face-to-face with the bison.

Among them, 72-year-old Narayan Das, who died while undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Native to South and Southeast Asia, the gaur has been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1986.
