Looking for water, a deer slipped inside a roughly 30ft-deep (9m) well in central India's Madhya Pradesh on March 21.

The incident took place in Inayatpur village, in Khurai region of Sagar district.

Locals alerted local emergency services personnel when they saw the animal. They promptly arrived and set about rescuing the deer with the help of villagers.

Video shows the deer struggling to stay afloat inside the well.

Rescuers clamber down and secure ropes around the mammal, after which they pull it up to safety.

Later, forest officials also arrived and released the deer into its natural habitat.
